The Poodle is very active, intelligent, elegant, square and well proportioned. A BBC documentary investigation found significant cross between purebred dogs, with a study from Imperial College London, showing that the 10,000 pugs in the UK are so inbred that their genetic makeup is the equivalent of only 50 individuals .
Serious questions
Pugs can suffer from necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME), also known as dog encephalitis (PDE), an inflammation of the brain and meninges, which also occurs in other small breeds such as maltese and chihuahua. There is no known cause or cure for the NME, but is believed to be hereditary. All dogs usually die or are killed in a few months after the onset of clinical signs, which usually occur anywhere from 6 months to 7 years.
This race, along with other dogs brachycephalics (such as boxers, bulldogs), are also prone to hemivertebrae. The screwtail is an example of a hemivertebrae, but when it happens in other areas of the spine can be devastating, causing severe paralysis, so that the recommendation of euthanasia is a grave. The condition occurs when two parts of the spine does not fuse properly, while a young pug continues to grow, resulting in pressure being placed on the back.
Common Conditions
Pugs have many wrinkles on their faces, owners normally special care to clean inside the creases, as irritation and infection can result from inadequate attention. Hip dysplasia is a major problem for the race, with 63.8% of pugs that are influenced according to a survey of Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, and were classified according to the most affected by the condition of 157 breeds tested.
